Memasuki abad ke-21, komunikasi menjadi salah satu aspek penting dalam kehidupan manusia modern yang melibatkan keputusan politik, kegiatan ekonomi bahkan juga sekedar hiburan. Keterkaitan komunikasi dengan berbagai elemen tersebut nampaknya tidak terjadi begitu saja.

 Ia memiliki kaitan erat dengan masa lalu dan perkembangan
teknologi. Semakin canggih teknologi, maka semakin canggih pula bentuk komunikasi yang ada. 

Dengan begitu, cara orang-orang berkomunikasi dengan yang lain berevolusi seiring majunya teknologi. Contohnya adalah munculnya sosial media yang menjadi sebuah wadah komunikasi di abad milenial. 

Akan tetapi, bentuk-bentuk komunikasi baru ini sebenarnya
menghasilkan apa yang disebut oleh Robert Darnton sebagai ilusi kesadaran masa lalu.  Untuk melihat argumennya mengenai komunikasi, nampaknya buku Poetry and the Police menjadi salah satu judul yang wajib dilirik.

Buku ini memotret sejarah komunikasi jauh di masa Perancis abad ke-18 dalam perspektif oralitas. Menurut Darnton, di abad ke-18 orang-orang memiliki puisi sebagai cara berkomunikasi secara sosial. 

Secara fungsi, dalam beberapa kasus puisi-puisi dapat menjadi sebuah saluran untuk menyinggung pemerintah, berita-berita palsu dan juga memproduksi ujaran kebencian, sesuatu yang masih kita temukan hingga hari ini. 

Hal ini mendorong terjadinya investigasi penuh terkait isu ini yang melibatkan polisi, aparatur pemerintahan, dan bahkan para rabi gereja.

Karena investigasi ini, dokumen melimpah terkait isu media sosial Perancis di abad ke-18 ini melimpah dan bahkan bertahan hingga lebih dari 200 tahun setelahnya.

Darnton mengemukakan bahwa sebelum abad ke-19, polisi di Perancis menggunakan kewenangannya untuk menekan bahkan menangkap orang-orang ketika rakyat menghina raja
mereka sebagai “monster”. Karena ancaman penangkapan oleh polisi ini, rakyat mengekspresikan kejahatan raja dengan cara membuat puisi satir. Ini menjadi sebuah era baru
satirisme di Perancis. 

Lebih jauh lagi, puisi-puisi ini menyebar ke masyarakat tanpa pengarang, dibacakan dan diteriakkan dimana-mana dan oleh siapapun sebagai ‘hinaan’ kepada istana yang tidak stabil. Sejak saat itu, tradisi puisi menjadi elemen penting dalam sejarah komunikasi di Perancis.
Secara singkat, buku ini layak dibaca karena ia berhasil memperlihatkan element paling penting dalam mengungkap jaringan-jaringan komunikasi Perancis di abad ke-18. Sang
penulis mengungkap sejarah komunikasi dengan cara yang berbeda.

Menggunakan sumber lisan dari orang-orang yang hidup ratusan tahun yang lalu, buku ini layak menjadi salah satu judul buku sejarah yang menarik untuk ditelaah. Karena sangat tidak mungkin mengandalkan manusia hidup untuk mengungkap kejadian ratusan tahun lalu, Robert Darnton menggunakan
catatan-catatan kriminal terkait penangkapan-penangkapan orang-orang-orang yang diduga terlibat kasus-kasus puisi satir. 

Meskipun catatan-catatan investigasi yang dilakukan polisi,
aparatur negara dan rabi gereja di abad tersebut berkaitan dengan stabilitas politik, nampak
