    Rendy Kurniawan

Over the last decade, social media platforms have become significant in the way they influence societies culturally. The penetration of social media with or without consiousnes affected the whole modern culture in the 21st century . Together with the emerge of virtual world and its platforms, social patterns and behaviors is transforming in many ways. Within this focus, Jose Van Dijck might be able to clear our path through the understanding of history of social media and its influence to the social life as well.

In many ways, social media did not just suddenly appeared. Their emergence have quite historical background. Within the last decade, it transforms from the simple coding to the complex networks within the internet connection, from the insignificant programs to the most reliable application on earth. With the development of many features of social media, people is now having their pleasure through the social media rather than social life. Despite of its pleasure, some people getting their financial profit using social media.  In turn, these platforms become the arena of public communication where contested rules. The private and public sphere are now obscure. The social amusement is now could be counted by coding number of like and dislike. This reality reflects the dramatic evolution of human behavior because of social media. In the other words, the social media have changed not simply culture but politic, communication, social life and economic as well.

Due to the explanation above, the works of Jose is explaining the whole development and influences of social media with multidisciplanaries approach, namely actor-network theory (ANT) and Political Economy. With these two, the prevailing objects are ownership, governance, business model, content, users and technology. Jose is figuring out the mentioned six points in five different forms of social media, it is ; Facebook, Twitter, Youtube , Flickr and Wikipedia. It means that Jose tries to discuss the influence of each social media culturally, socially, politically, technologically and economically.

Eventhough social media seems to be comprehensively discussed in this book, there is no chance that this condition will last long. Concerning the rapid development of social media, Jose’s work which is published in 2012 might need some kind of addition and deeper researches. For exampele, only four years after this book was published, one by another social media is gradually appearing. look at the recent time when instagram and whatsapp is now conquering the virtual world. Therefore, the research of social media is hardly dynamic and challenging as well.
