    Haji Agus Salim telah dikenal sebagai salah satu manusia jenius yang pernah lahir di Indonesia. Bahkan saking kagumnya dengan kejeniusannya Buya Hamka mengatakan satu orang Agus Salim senilai dengan satu satu juta manusia bahkan lebih. Tapi uniknya kelak kecuali anak bungsunya tidak ada seorang pun anak Haji Agus Salim yang pernah bersekolah formal.

    Sekolah Belanda yang bersifat Kolonial

    Bukan tanpa sebab Haji Agus Salim enggan untuk menyekolahkan anaknya, ia memandang bahwa sekolah-sekolah yang didirikan Belanda waktu itu masih sangat bersifat kolonial. Selain itu, sebagaimana diungkapkan oleh Muhammad Roem, koleganya sesama politukus Islam Haji Agus Salim juga tak ingin anak-anaknya melalui jalan “berlumpur” akibat pelajaran kolonial.

    Sebab musabab ialah gara-gara pendidikan kolonial, Haji Agus Salim merasakan bahwa dia hampir saja menjadi seorang ateis karena skeptis terhadap agama. Perasaan itu mulai hilang tatkala dia bekerja di kantor konsulat Belanda di Jeddah, Arab saudi. Disana dia bertemu dan menimba pada salah seorang kerabatnya yang menjadi ulama besar di Mekkah, Syekh Ahmad Khatib Al-Minangkabawi.

    Memilih Mendidik Anaknya Sendiri

    Mohammad Roem dalam salah satu tulisannya yang berjudul “Haji Agus Salim Memimpin adalah Menderita”, sempat terheran-heran sekaligus kagum dengan ketrampilan berbahasa Belanda anak Haji Agus Salim yang bernama Syauket. Mohammad Roem mengisahkan “Kami heran melihat Syauket yang umurnya baru 4 tahun fasih berbahasa Belanda, ia dapat menerangkan badanya gatal dan minta digaruk.”

    Bahkan anak pertama Haji Agus Salim Dolly pada usia enam tahun sudah membaca buku detektif Nick Carter dan Lord Lister. Sementara adiknya Totok, pada usia 13 tahun telah membaca buku Mahabarata dalam bahasa Belanda. Buku bacaan yang menurut Mohammad Roem setara dengan anak AMS (setingkat SMP dengan pengajaran bahasa Belanda) bahkan mungkin lebih.

    Walaupun tidak pernah memasukkan anak-anaknya ke sekolah formal tidak lantas membuat Haji Agus Salim berlepas tangan terhadap pendidikan anak-anaknya. Dia mendidik sendiri mereka dengan metode dan caranya sendiri. Mungkin cara mendidik Haji Agus Salim ini bisa menjadi referensi bagi orang tua hari ini.

    Haji Agus Salim tidak pernah membatasi waktu belajar dan bermain. Setiap saat dia bisa memberikan pelajaran pada anak-anaknya. Yang lebih terpenting kata Mohammad Roem, Haji Agus Salim selalu menanamkan keinginan untuk mengetahui yang lebih besar dan mencari pengetahuan itu sendiri.

    Tidak Pernah Bersekolah Tapi Berpendidikan.

    Oleh karenanya tak heran banyak yang tak percaya bahwa anak anak Haji Agus Salim tak pernah mengenyam bangku sekolah. Jojet Salah satu anak Haji Agus Salim mengatakan bahwa gara-gara ia menguasai banyak bahasa asing, hafal berbagai macam jenis puisi, penuh humor dan mengasyikan. Tidak ada satu pun yang percaya bahwa dia sebagai anak Haji Agus Salim tidak pernah bersekolah formal.
